Battery charging warning light

The battery light actually means a charging fault: the alternator has stopped charging. The car runs on battery reserve, often 30 minutes to an hour. Switch off AC, radio and seat heaters and head to a garage without stopping the engine.

Likely causes3

Likely causes

  1. Alternator not charging#1

With the engine running, battery voltage should read 13.8 to 14.7 V. Below that, the alternator is not charging.

  2. Worn auxiliary belt#2

A squeal on cold start or when turning the wheel very often comes from the auxiliary belt or its tensioner.

  3. Weak or dying battery#3

A battery over 5 years old that rests below 12.4 V is very likely the culprit.
