Replace your car battery
Swapping a battery takes half an hour. The only real difficulty is choosing the right technology and not losing electronic settings.
Tools
- 10 and 13 mm spanners
- Terminal brush
- Gloves and goggles
- Jump pack or memory saver (recommended)
Parts
- Battery with the same capacity (Ah), cranking current (A) and technology (standard, EFB or AGM)
Before you start
Note the radio code if there is one, and check whether your model needs the battery registered.
Steps
- Switch off, remove the key and lock the doors remotely if the car has keyless entry.
- Always disconnect the negative (−, black) first, then the positive (+, red).
- Remove the hold-down clamp at the base and lift the battery out upright. It weighs 15 to 25 kg.
- Clean the terminals and tray. A sulphated terminal causes starting problems.
- Fit the new battery, secure the clamp, then connect the positive first and the negative last.
- Start the car and reset the electric windows (hold the switch up for 3 seconds) and clock.
Safety
Never lay a metal tool across both terminals: a short circuit can make the battery explode.
Return the old battery to the seller: take-back is mandatory and free.
Indicative estimate. MecaScan cannot see your vehicle: always have a diagnosis confirmed by a professional, and never work on brakes, steering or airbags without the skills.
