Change your motorbike oil

A bike oil change is like a car's, with one extra requirement: oil that suits a wet clutch.

Time 40 minDifficulty ManageableAt a garage, this job costs £55 – £120

Tools

  • Spanner for the drain plug
  • Motorbike filter wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Torque wrench

Parts

  • JASO MA or MA2 motorbike oil in the manual's grade
  • Oil filter
  • New drain plug washer

Before you start

Ride 5 minutes to warm the oil, then stand the bike upright on a centre or paddock stand.

Steps

  1. Remove the filler cap, then the drain plug under the sump.
  2. Let it drain and change the filter, oiling its seal.
  3. Refit the plug with a new washer at the manual's torque, often low on bike cases.
  4. Refill, run for a minute, switch off and check the level with the bike upright.

Safety

Energy-saving car oil makes a motorbike clutch slip.
