Replace your motorbike battery

A motorbike battery usually lives under the seat. Lithium units are lighter but need a compatible charger.

Time 20 minDifficulty EasyAt a garage, this job costs £60 – £140

Tools

  • Phillips screwdriver or 8 and 10 mm spanners

Parts

  • Battery with the same reference (e.g. YTX9-BS) or lithium equivalent

Before you start

A dry-charged maintenance-free battery must be filled with acid and left to rest for 30 minutes.

Steps

  1. Remove the seat or side panel.
  2. Disconnect the negative first, then the positive.
  3. Lift the battery out, fit the new one and connect the positive first.
  4. Tighten the screws without forcing: bike terminals are fragile.

Safety

Over winter, a battery maintainer prevents a dead battery in spring.
