Replace the cabin air filter

A clogged cabin filter causes misting, smells and weak airflow. On most cars it hides behind the glovebox.

Time 15 minDifficulty EasyAt a garage, this job costs £20 – £75

Tools

  • None, or a screwdriver

Parts

  • Cabin filter, ideally activated carbon

Before you start

Empty the glovebox.

Steps

  1. Open the glovebox and release its side stops so it drops down.
  2. Remove the filter cover and slide the filter out, noting the airflow arrow.
  3. Fit the new filter with the arrow the same way and close up.

Safety

If the filter sits under the scuttle panel below the windscreen, work with the wipers up and the engine off.
