Replace the engine air filter

It is the easiest job on a car: one box, a few clips, one filter.

Time 15 minDifficulty EasyAt a garage, this job costs £20 – £70

Tools

  • Screwdriver or socket depending on the housing
  • Vacuum or cloth

Parts

  • Air filter for your engine

Before you start

Find the black box connected to the intake duct, usually on top of or beside the engine.

Steps

  1. Undo the lid clips or screws.
  2. Lift out the old filter, noting which way it sits.
  3. Clean the bottom of the box: leaves and dust must not reach the engine.
  4. Seat the new filter flat, seal in place, and close the lid.

Safety

A badly closed lid lets unfiltered air in and can upset the air flow sensor.
